Propane, also known as R-290, is a natural refrigerant used in domestic refrigeration systems and commercial refrigeration appliances.

Although it offers good thermodynamic performance, this fluid has long been dismissed because it is extremely flammable, which raises safety concerns. Currently, propane is used in low-load configurations with specific containment measures to ensure safe use.
