R-744, also known as CO2, is considered a natural refrigerant. It has an ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential) index of 0, meaning it has no impact on the ozone layer. Its GWP (Global Warming Potential) index is 1, limiting its contribution to the greenhouse effect. Though overlooked for some time because of its high pressure requirements and relatively poor performance in single refrigerant systems, it does offer significant environmental benefits when used for industrial or commercial refrigeration applications, particularly in cascade systems or as a refrigerant.
